I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Shopping local to create upcycled home decor is a win-win-win situation; the local shops get your business, you get to be creative, and your house will thank you for making it so pretty.
I wanted to give a little life to the area next to my couch in my reading room. I don’t know if you can tell by the look on my dog’s face but she clearly wants it to be made-over as well. 🙂
For this blog post, I started my shopping adventure at the Salvation Army Thrift Shop. It’s always a pleasure shopping at the “Sal Vay” because not only is it helping a good cause, but its also encouraging the practice of what haus2home is all about; reclaiming, reusing and upcycling! I found lots of hidden treasures for inspiration and walked out with a lamp, a shelf, a suitcase and some lace!
Then, I headed to my local Valu Home Centers for supplies!
I started this upcycling project by prepping everything for paint. This included taking all the price tags off with some cleaning solution, cleaning any dust or particles off with a wet rag, sanding, and taping.
I decided I wanted everything to be the same color, so I went with a Krylon White Glossy paint.
Tip: When using spay paint, I always read the back of the can because not all spray paints are used the same.
I went ahead and gave everything nice thin coats, letting the paint dry between each one.
Next, using the lace I found at the Thrift Shop, I decided to try a new technique and spray another color on top of the white creating a lace effect.
Ta da! Once it was all dry, I placed the suitcase on top of a small table to create a larger surface for an end table.

What is the thing attached to the spray can??
It is a handle to turn it into a spray gun. You can get them at your local hardware store for a couple of dollars and it helps the spray painting process tremendously!!
