The fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays and its almost here! So before the fireworks and the cookouts commence, I’m taking a moment and remember how lucky I am to be an American!
In honor of celebrating our nations birth, I decided to make some original American flag art and share the tutorial with you!
Here’s what you will need for this project:
- pallet wood
- large clamp
- nails/screws
- saw
- paint/spray paint (I used Krylon spray paint)
- painters tape
- stencil
- sandpaper
First, get your wood ready! I used pallet wood. To learn how to prepare it, read up here.
Once your wood is ready, arrange the planks how you would like them and use a large clamp to clamp them together. Then, using nails or screws (whichever you prefer) run two smaller planks perpendicular to your other planks and secure them together along the backside.
Now that your wood is secure, if you need to trim some off the edges to make clean lines for your flag, now is a good time to do so. Next, mark off the areas you do not want to have painted. I decided to keep every other slat of the wood natural.
Now you are ready to paint away! I used Krylon:
First paint the red stripes and the blue boxes background. Then, once that is dry you can paint the stars -I used a stencil for this. Note: next time I will probably use a star template and spray the blue over the stars so that the natural wood are the stars, just like the white stripes! I love the way the natural wood looks!
Once everything was completely dry, I went ahead and gave it a sand to make it look rustic and weathered.
