Sustainable Sunday – March Edition

Tomorrow is the first day of spring! Soon there will be flowers sprouting from the ground, the weather will turn, and the days will continue to get longer and longer.  With all the joys of spring also comes spring cleaning -so lets talk about how to do it in a sustainable, eco-friendly way!

  1. Vinegar
If it’s not already, vinegar will be your new BFF.  It has countless options for cleaning, it comes in a glass bottle (easy to recycle), and works like a charm. My favorite use for vinegar is cleaning out my microwave. I put a little bit of vinegar in a microwave safe glass container and run the microwave for a minute or two. Once its heated, it allows the grease and grime to be easily wiped out from the inside of the microwave. Your microwave will shine like the top of the Chrysler building!
  2. Rags
It’s time to ditch the paper towels!  Using rags to wipe down surfaces, dust and clean is not only ecofriendly, but its also more effective. Rags last so much longer than paper towels ever would while your scrubbing away. When you’re finished with the job, just throw the rags in the wash and you can use them all over again.
People rave about the Norwex cloths- I haven’t tried them yet but I would love to hear feedback from those of you who have!
  3. Orange Peel Cleaner
Yes, you read that correctly.  A multi-purpose cleaner made out of orange peels: via grouprecipes.com. “Just stuff a jar with orange peels, cover with vinegar, put a lid on it and let it steep in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks or more…and hey presto….orange scented cleaner! Put in a spray bottle for easy application.”
