It’s winter in Buffalo! That means chilly temps, snow storms, cuddling up by the fire, playing in the snow and crafting inside! We feel extremely lucky to live in Buffalo and get to experience all four seasons because we absolutely love to spend time outside and enjoy the great outdoors! This week is a little too cold to be outside for too long, so we figured we would use the colder temps to our advantage for this indoor/outdoor DIY kid craft.

For this colored ice globe craft, we used:

– balloons
– food coloring
– water
– freezing temperatures outside (use your freezer if you are in warmer areas!)
– scissors

We took each balloon and opened them up to put a couple of drops of food coloring in. Then, using our slop sink faucet, we filled each balloon with water and tied a knot.

Once all the balloons were filled, we put them outside on the front porch to let them freeze overnight. In the morning, we brought them back inside and began taking the balloons off with scissors to check out our creations!

The kids had such a great time seeing all their color combinations and how they ended up freezing. Some of them looked really wild – like little rambutan fruit and the drawings you see of germs! I’m sure there is a scientific reason the colors formed into those little spiked balls, but this is not the blog for that. Ha!
(Update: I couldn’t handle not knowing the answer to that and looked it up. It’s because water freezes from the outside in, and the dye has a different freezing point. You’re welcome.)

Here’s a view of all of the different colored ice globes we put together. What do you think of this winter kid craft project? Leave your comments below!
